Iowa Dollars for Scholars News Archive
Thanks to all who voted for Iowa Dollars for Scholars as we competed for $50,000 in April's Pepsi Refresh Project. Though we didn't finish in the top ten, we thank you for your support!
Our idea was to use the $50,000 prize as seed money to develop an annual statewide signature fund-raising event, "Celebrate Iowa and Higher Education Dreams," which will promote Dollars for Scholars and reward students with significant scholarships.
Tax-Exempt Status for Dollars for Scholars Chapters Safe
One of the benefits of affiliation to our grassroots Dollars for Scholars chapters is that Scholarship America, in consultation with tax specialists from KPMG LLP, files a group Form 990 which lists all of our Dollars for Scholars chapters. In early May, about 800 chapters were erroneously listed by the National Center for Charitable Statistics/The Urban Institute as not having filed their Form 990 or Form 990-N, and were poised to lose their tax-exempt status. This is not true.
Because all forms were correctly completed and filed on time, Dollars for Scholars chapters are not in danger of losing their tax-exempt status.

Iowa Dollars for Scholars Among Beneficiaries at The Principal Charity Classic
The PGA Champions Tour's Principal Charity Classic is returning to Glen Oaks Country Club in West Des Moines May 26-31, and Iowa Dollars for Scholars is among the nonprofit organizations that the tournament can help. But they can't do it without you!
The "Birdies for Charity" pledge drive at the Classic allows you to pledge a small amount of money for each birdie scored by a player in the tournament, and designate it to a charity of your choice—including Iowa Dollars for Scholars. With an average of 800 birdies throughout the tournament, a pledge of just 5 cents per birdie is enough for a $40 donation.

Iowa Dollars for Scholars and KnowHow2GoIowa: A Winning Partnership
Iowa Dollars for Scholars has proudly joined the College Planning Center as a partner in its KnowHow2GOIowa program.
Going to college has become a part of the American dream. Unfortunately, it takes more than big ideas and good grades to get there. The U.S. Department of Education reports that nine out of 10 students want to pursue postsecondary education. But many students – especially those who are underserved or are the first in their family to pursue a secondary education – are unaware of the steps they must take. For this reason, such students are vastly underrepresented at most colleges.
The American Council on Education, the Lumina Foundation for Education and the Ad Council have created KnowHow2GO, a multi-year, multimedia public service campaign designed to help middle school and high school students achieve their dreams of going to college.
The Iowa Student Loan College Planning Center is a proud sponsor of the KnowHow2GOIowa campaign. The organization provides free college information and support to a diverse population of students and their families.
